Why should I work with you?
I’ve been working in the creative industries in one way or another for literal decades in businesses of all shapes and sizes. Specialising in operations, people and admin, I have a keen eye for detail and am always alert to opportunities that are waiting to be explored.
What’s your background?
After studying Music Industry Management & Marketing in the late 90s (Gen X rules!), I moved into a succession of high-reponsibility, high-pressure jobs, including working for the Ministry Of Defence in a key civilian role, the 999 service and for the Scottish Police records office.
After learning how to keep cool in a crisis, communicate with a huge variety of difference characters and how to stay awake on night shift without coffee, I then moved into what would become my specialist field - helping companies get organised for growth, stability, to attract investment and to be effective and efficient.
Beginning with a long tenure at iomart, a then-IT start-up, I helped build the company from the ground up, taking charge of admin, complaints, support and facilities teams, as well as indulging my creative writing side by providing copy for their website, newsletters and marketing materials. After a stint working in the Bangkok office (sawadee ka!), I returned to Scotland to take up a post with Red Bee Media, a post production and creative agency, providing subtitles for television channels in the UK, Europe and beyond.
Taking on the role of Operations Manager, I was responsible for the day to day running of the subtitling operation, supervising, allocating and troubleshooting for up to 200 people on any given day working on live and pre-recorded broadcasts. During this time, I really honed my decision-making and critical thinking skills, as well as developing a knack for strategic planning and budgeting.
After a redundancy, I honed in even further on my drive to work with creative businesses, firstly as Website Manager for Penny Black, where I helped move this chain of indie retail businesses over to Shopify and build up their hugely successful ecommerce offering. From purchasing and visual merchandising to newsletter and social posts, I worked with the management team to level up the online presence of the business.
From there, I moved agency-side to Cut Media, a sports content agency specialising in brand activation, athlete sponsorship and promotional content, joining to head up the operations and people function. Sadly, due to stormy market forces in the sports marketing field, Cut Media is no more, but it left me not only with great experience and skills from being part of the senior leadership team, but an extra string to my bow in the Production area, as I acted as Production Coordinator and Assistant Producer on several productions, including a memorable stint organising travel and accommodation for crew for the Paris Olympics with a week’s notice!
Since then, I’ve helped various creative agencies with short and long-term planning, cashflow forecasting, budgeting, people planning, organisational development, strategic goal setting and coaching CEO and business owners. Businesses I’ve helped recently include an architectural design studio, an animation studio and a renewable energy start-up, as well as continuing to work with indie retailers to help move them forward with their plans and figure out what their goals are and how to achieve them. And all whilst running my own creative businesses on the side. I’ve vast experience on both sides of the coin - corporate and indie - and am uniquely positioned to apply learnings from both of these sides to each other, making for agile, adaptive and quirky businesses that go from strength to strength.
What do I know about running a creative business?
Alongside working in the corporate world, I ran my own creative indie business designing, making, packaging and promoting craft kits, homewares and accessories. Miso Funky (latterly renamed The Bellwether) ran for over 20 years, with highlights including being stocked in Liberty, John Lewis and dozens of independent retailers in the UK and around the world.
I also set up a second independent business designing and printing customised cross stitch fabrics during the pandemic. I grew this business from £0 to five figures within 3 months, dominating the printed fabric market on both Etsy and my own Shopify store. I wrapped this up in 2023, selling a thriving going concern to concentrate on opportunities in the corporate world but you can’t keep a creative-hearted gal down for long! I now make tiny pottery alongside the occasional cross stitch project and enjoy sketching, painting (badly) and plotting my next creative moves!
What services do I offer?
There’s 4 main areas you can work with me within:
Admin Support
Indie businesses live and die by their web presence, especially those in retail. Having your products up to date, attractively presented and available to buy without obstacles is paramount to your success. If you find yourself with piles of products waiting to be added to your inventory system, don’t put it off any longer! Every day you leave that pile of doom is more revenue you’re missing out on.
Examples of services I provide in this area:
Adding products to inventory
Writing SEO-friendly product descriptions
Improving website navigation, collections and identifying opportunities for cross-promotion
Practical Support
Remember the last time you had a holiday? Or when you didn’t have to cover the shopfloor because your staff are sick or on leave? For those with stores in the West of Scotland or Central Belt, I can provide in-person cover to allow you to have that break you’ve dreamt of or to provide short-term cover for holidays.
I can also offer stocktaking, visual merchandising support and offer advice and tips for improving the impact of your displays and maximising sales.
There’s nothing I enjoy more than packing up orders, so I’m also available to pick, pack and post orders for your indie business, during busy periods like Christmas or Valentine’s Day, or on a regular retainer basis.
As you may be able to tell from this lengthy page, I also love creative writing, so I’m more than happy to work with you on content planning, writing newsletters, product descriptions or managing social channels to make sure you present your business to your customers how you want to - and crucially, when you want to, as marketing comms so often become a “if I get round to it” task that never gets prioritised.
Strategic Planning
If you’ve got something in mind that you need an extra brain on, I’m happy to help brainstorm your next move. Whether it’s the pros and cons of opening a second (or first!) store, navigating new sales channels or working through people issues, a problem shared is a problem halved - and a plan moved forward.
I’ve helped agencies take stock of their organisation, look at future planning, cashflow and project planning, to devise rate cards, budgets and hiring plans - no matter your size, having a handle on the future and the direction you want to travel in is always valuable. It can be hard to know where to start - that’s where I come in to help you work out what you want and how you’ll get there.
Coaching
Running a small or micro business can be a lonely place - your brain has to keep on top of everything and the buck stops with you. You can let that motivate you or consume you but finding a healthy balance is what makes your business sustainable for the longterm. I hold certificates in coaching and counselling and am a qualified Mental Health First Aider.
I offer informal, relaxed and commitment-free coaching for indie business owners or those aspiring to run their own show. These sessions can be in-person or virtual, with the initial consultation always being free and the goal being to help you move forward with whatever your plans are.
